Fish & Chips Night at The Tea Room — A Proper English Pub Experience Without Leaving San Miguel
Last week I went on a little journey to an English pub, all the way upstairs at The Tea Room on Salida a Celaya 6, Interior 10, in Guadiana. I stumbled onto one of the best meals I’ve had in recent memory. And honestly? I didn’t even need a passport.
The occasion was Fish & Chips Night, a monthly pop-up that chef Ryan McNab, a Leeds, England native, has turned into something genuinely special. Ryan didn’t just bring a recipe to San Miguel. He brought the whole mood. The fish came out crispy in exactly the way fish should be crispy with that satisfying crunch that gives way to perfectly flaky, tender white fish underneath. The pub fries were everything pub fries should be. The smashed peas were the kind of detail that tells you the chef actually cares. And the dessert? Let’s just say I wasn’t sharing.
The setting added its own magic. The rooftop community tables pull you into exactly the kind of evening where you end up talking to strangers and leaving as friends. San Miguel’s skyline does the rest with a soft golden light fading over the rooftops, while you’re tucking into proper English comfort food is a combination nobody should be able to pull off, and yet here we are.
Upon arrival, guests were greeted with a complimentary “Shandy,” which is a drink I’ll admit that I approached with mild skepticism and finished with genuine enthusiasm. Light, refreshing, and a perfect opener for what was to come.
And threading it all together was Eve Mickendrow, hostess with the mostess, making sure every guest felt less like a customer and more like someone who’d been invited to a very good dinner party.
This is one of those evenings San Miguel does so well ~ unexpected, warm, delicious, and completely worth marking on your calendar.
